CephFS hang via unreleased snapshot semaphore
Published Jun 18, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Denial of service in Linux CephFS clients 5.8 through 5.19.3 allows remote attackers to hang filesystem operations via an MDS IMPORT message. In fs/ceph/caps.c, handle_cap_grant returns on the i_auth_cap != cap path without releasing snap_rwsem, blocking later write-lock takers. A malicious, compromised, or on-path MDS can trigger the flaw after CephFS is mounted, leaving the client hung until reboot.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
