Local privilege escalation via ROM-status buffer overflow
Published Jun 18, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Out-of-bounds write in Linux kernel 5.10 through 5.15.62 and 5.16 through 5.19.3 allows local users to gain kernel privileges. The hda_dsp_dump_ext_rom_status function adds snprintf's would-be output length to the next write offset, so truncation can move msg + len beyond the fixed buffer. Reachability requires Intel SOF HDA support and execution of the extended ROM-status dump; the kernel team describes an actual overflow as unrealistic.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
