Kernel crash via mismatched swap-entry conversion
Published Jun 18, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Denial of service in Linux kernel 5.19 allows local users to crash the kernel by invoking mprotect on a genuine swap entry. The mm/mprotect change_pte_range path passes a genuine swap entry to pfn_swap_entry_to_page() without first verifying a write migration entry. Local low-privilege access is required, and successful triggering causes a kernel BUG and interrupts the system.
