CVE-2022-49948

Kernel memory corruption via stale console selection

Published Jun 18, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Out-of-bounds access in Linux kernel virtual terminals allows local users to corrupt graphics memory by changing the console font. A stale selection can lie outside the resized screen, and vc_do_resize() removes it after KDFONTOP installs a larger font, driving imageblit beyond framebuffer bounds. The user must own a controlling virtual terminal; the resulting write can corrupt adjacent kernel memory or trigger a kernel oops without separate user interaction.
