CVE-2022-49934

Kernel compromise via scan request use-after-free

Published Jun 18, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Use-after-free in Linux kernel mac80211 allows physically proximate attackers to disclose memory, corrupt state, or crash the kernel. During an active Wi-Fi scan, __ieee80211_scan_completed() frees scan_req through cfg80211_scan_done() while ieee80211_scan_rx() can still read scan_req->flags through an RCU-protected dangling pointer. Exploitation requires the same Wi-Fi radio segment and crafted Probe Response traffic timed against scan completion; the documented outcomes remain within the host kernel.
