CVE-2022-49764

System hang via recursive BPF tracepoint execution

Published May 1, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026

Denial of service in Linux kernel 4.17 through 6.0.9 allows local users to hang the system via a recursive BPF raw tracepoint program. A program attached to contention_begin calls bpf_trace_printk, whose trace_printk_lock acquisition retriggers the same tracepoint without a recursion guard. Local access and permission to load and attach BPF programs are required; successful triggering repeatedly re-enters the program and interrupts system availability.
