Disputed diagnostic-only error-reporting change
Published Mar 27, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
A disputed use-after-free claim in Linux 3.4 through 6.1 concerns btrfs delayed-reference error reporting during transaction aborts. The patch moves logging into run_one_delayed_ref(), promotes btrfs_debug() to btrfs_err(), and reports fields before the caller can free the node. The btrfs maintainer states that the change has no functional security effect, while Ubuntu says the internal error is not attacker-influenceable and the prior code does not read freed fields.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
