CVE-2022-49748

Local availability loss via overflowing counter mask

Published Mar 27, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026

Integer overflow in the AMD x86 perf subsystem of affected Linux kernels allows local users to disrupt system availability through perf events. During amd_core_pmu_init(), arch/x86/events/amd/core.c builds even_ctr_mask with a 32-bit constant shifted by the loop index and passes the result as a 64-bit mask, so shifts of 32 or more overflow. Reaching the faulty path requires local low-privileged access and an AMD x86 performance-monitoring configuration.
