System crash via unsynchronized TCP probe interval read
Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
A race condition in the Linux kernel allows local users to crash the system through concurrent access to a TCP probe interval sysctl. The tcp_mtu_check_reprobe function reads net->ipv4.sysctl_tcp_probe_interval without READ_ONCE while that value can change concurrently. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access and precise timing; the reported consequence is availability loss without data disclosure or modification.
