System interruption via premature LBR quirk check
Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Denial of service in Linux kernel 5.17 through 5.18.14 allows local users to interrupt the system through Intel LBR handling. The lbr_from_signext_quirk_needed() check runs before intel_pmu_lbr_init() parses the LBR format, so the required TSX quirk is skipped. Exploitation requires an Intel Haswell system using LBR_FORMAT_EIP_FLAGS2 with TSX disabled, where the resulting unchecked MSR write triggers a general-protection fault.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
