Authenticated code execution via unchecked plugin installation
Published Jun 7, 2023 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Missing authorization in ten WordPress plugins allows remote authenticated users with subscriber access to install and activate arbitrary plugins. The cool_plugins_install AJAX handler accepts attacker-chosen nonce names and ZIP URLs, verifies any valid nonce, and extracts the archive without checking capabilities. Subscriber access exposes a usable nonce; the installed PHP plugin can then execute code with the WordPress server account.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
