Resource exhaustion via leaked character-device regions
Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Resource leak in the Linux kernel IDXD dmaengine driver allows local users to exhaust resources and interrupt service. When alloc_chrdev_region() fails in idxd_cdev_register(), the function returns without unregistering character-device regions created during earlier loop iterations. NVD assesses the path as requiring local low-privileged access; kernel.org does not document how that user forces or repeats the allocation failure.
