EFI runtime service loss via firmware variable reads
Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Denial of service in affected Linux 5.x branches disables EFI runtime services during early boot on Apple T2 Macs. The platform certificate loader reads the UEFI db and dbx variables without excluding affected Apple models, causing Apple firmware to page-fault. The failure requires Linux to boot on T2 hardware and prevents subsequent EFI runtime calls and Secure Boot certificate-list loading.
