CVE-2022-49347

Kernel crash via stale inline-data state assertion

Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026

Reachable assertion in Linux kernel ext4 starting with 3.8 allows local users to crash the kernel through crafted inline-file operations. A failed inline-to-extent conversion restores EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA while dirty pages remain, causing ext4_writepages to hit BUG_ON. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access, an ext4 filesystem using inline data and delayed allocation, and a sequence of write, fallocate, and flush operations.
