Local system hang via Wi-Fi driver deadlock
Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Improper locking in the staging Wi-Fi driver in Linux 4.12 through 5.18.4 allows local users to hang the system during network association. rtw_joinbss_event_prehandle holds pmlmepriv->lock while del_timer_sync waits for _rtw_join_timeout_handler, which needs the same lock. The condition requires the affected driver and a join-timeout race during association; the resulting deadlock blocks the handler indefinitely and affects availability only.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
