System hang via rtl8723bs scan-timer deadlock
Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated Aug 12, 2026
A deadlock in the Linux kernel rtl8723bs Wi-Fi driver allows local users to hang affected systems during scan completion. The rtw_surveydone_event_callback holds pmlmepriv->lock while del_timer_sync() waits for rtw_scan_timeout_handler(), which attempts to acquire the same lock. Reachability requires an affected kernel with the rtl8723bs driver and compatible Wi-Fi hardware; the documented consequence is an indefinite hang, not data access or modification.
