CVE-2022-49305

Local beacon shutdown hang via lock deadlock

Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026

Improper locking in the rtl8192u staging driver in Linux kernel 2.6.33 through 5.18.3 allows local users to hang beacon shutdown. ieee80211_beacons_stop() calls del_timer_sync() while holding beacon_lock, while the timer callback waits to acquire the same lock. A low-privileged local user needs an affected kernel with the rtl8192u driver and beacon activity; triggering the race blocks beacon shutdown indefinitely.
