Service hang via join-timeout locking deadlock
Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Improper locking in the rtl8192eu staging driver in Linux 5.15 allows local users to hang wireless association processing. The rtw_joinbss_event_prehandle function calls del_timer_sync while holding pmlmepriv->lock, while the timer handler waits for that same lock. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and a concurrent join-timeout path, and the affected association handler blocks indefinitely.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
