CVE-2022-49197

Incorrect sender group metadata via out-of-bounds shift

Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026

Integer overflow in affected Linux kernel branches allows local users to trigger undefined behavior through a Netlink group above 32. The netlink_group_mask function shifts a 32-bit integer by group minus one without rejecting group numbers above 32. Access to the demonstrated BRVLAN trigger requires privileged network configuration; observed effects are incorrect sender group metadata or a UBSAN report, not demonstrated code execution.
