Kernel memory corruption via repair bio double cleanup
Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in Linux btrfs 3.18 through 5.17.1 allows local users to corrupt kernel memory via reads on multi-copy volumes. After a repair-bio submission failure, the submit helper invokes bio_endio, but the repair path also frees the bio and failure record while endio cleanup is running. An already-mounted RAID1, DUP, or RAID10 btrfs volume and a failed data-bio submission are required; successful exploitation permits kernel-memory access, control-flow hijacking, or a kernel panic.
