CVE-2022-49162

Kernel crash via short framebuffer write

Published Feb 26, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in the sm712fb driver in Linux allows local users to crash the kernel via a three-byte write to the framebuffer. In smtcfb_write, the open-coded endianness remainder path decrements the destination pointer and writes bytes before the intended framebuffer address. Exploitation requires local write access to the SM712 or SM720 framebuffer device, and the demonstrated consequence is a kernel page fault and service interruption.
