Kernel crash via reused dynamic-event type identifiers
Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Use-after-free in Linux kernel tracing allows local users with tracing privileges to crash the kernel through dynamic events. Removing a traced dynamic event leaves its ring-buffer records intact, so a later event can reuse the 16-bit type identifier and parse stale records with incompatible logic. The trigger requires privileged tracing access and 65,536 event create-remove cycles; the bounded consequence is a kernel crash.
