System crash via oversized HID field width
Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Out-of-bounds shifting in the Linux kernel HID core allows local users to crash the system through a crafted HID input report. In snto32() within drivers/hid/hid-core.c, an HID field width above 32 reaches a 32-bit sign-extension shift without being clamped, producing an excessive shift exponent. Reachability requires local access to deliver a malformed HID report; successful triggering interrupts availability without reported data disclosure or modification.
