CVE-2022-48970

Kernel crash via missing socket namespace context

Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in the AF_UNIX diagnostic handler in Linux 5.3 through 6.0.12 allows local users to crash the kernel. unix_diag_get_exact() allocates a response skb without an associated socket, but sk_diag_fill() then calls sk_user_ns() through that absent socket instead of using the input skb's netlink callback socket. A low-privileged local user can reach the fault with an exact AF_UNIX SOCK_DIAG netlink request, causing a kernel oops and service interruption.
