CVE-2022-48839

Local kernel memory corruption via stale packet metadata

Published Jul 16, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Out-of-bounds access in Linux 2.6.14 through 5.16.16 allows local users to corrupt kernel memory through a crafted AF_PACKET socket. tpacket_rcv leaves stale bytes in skb->cb, causing packet_recvmsg to trust a bogus address length and copy beyond the intended socket-address buffers. Reaching the flaw requires PACKET_RX_RING, PACKET_COPY_THRESH, and a local receive call; exploitation can disclose kernel memory, hijack control flow, or panic the host.
