Kernel warning via incorrect USB control pipe
Published Jul 16, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Incorrect USB control-transfer handling in Linux 4.20 through 5.17-rc8 allows local users to trigger a kernel warning. The usbtmc_ioctl_request() path always selects usb_rcvctrlpipe(), including for outbound transfers whose request type requires usb_sndctrlpipe(). Reachability requires a USB Test and Measurement Class device and access to its ioctl interface; the upstream report demonstrates a direction-mismatch warning rather than a crash.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
