CVE-2022-48833

Local service interruption via incomplete Btrfs cleanup

Published Jul 16, 2024 · Updated May 27, 2026

Improper Btrfs cleanup in affected Linux kernels allows local users to interrupt filesystem service after a log-tree writeback failure. free_log_tree() stops on an EIO from read_extent_buffer_pages() when WRITE_ERR is set and UPTODATE is clear, leaving reserved space and dirty extent buffers unreleased. Reachability requires local access and a Btrfs transaction abort after failed log-tree writeback; the resulting cleanup failure produces warnings during unmount.
