CVE-2022-48829Network attack vector

File metadata corruption via oversized NFSv3 size

Published Jul 16, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Improper size handling in affected Linux kernels allows remote attackers to corrupt file metadata through crafted NFSv3 SETATTR or CREATE requests. The decode_sattr3 function silently caps a client-supplied unsigned size above s64_max before storing it in the signed loff_t ia_size field, preserving a different value than the client sent. Reachability requires an enabled, network-accessible NFSv3 server and the ability to address an exported filehandle; the bounded consequence is an unintended file size and potential data corruption.
