CVE-2022-48805

Kernel heap disclosure via malformed USB receive metadata

Published Jul 16, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Out-of-bounds reads in the Linux kernel allow physically proximate attackers to disclose kernel heap data through a malicious USB device. ax88179_rx_fixup() fails to validate metadata bounds, packet overlap, and SKB tail positions before parsing an RX aggregate. Exploitation requires a connected AX88179/178A USB Ethernet device; crafted ICMPv6 traffic can return random kernel heap data.
