CVE-2022-48745

System crash via firmware-reset timer race

Published Jun 20, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Race condition in the Linux kernel mlx5 firmware-reset flow allows local users to crash the system during timer deactivation. The mlx5_stop_sync_reset_poll function calls del_timer(), which does not wait for an in-flight poll_sync_reset callback before teardown proceeds. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access, an mlx5 device, and a firmware-reset timing window; the documented consequence is availability loss only.
