Host crash via invalid copy-up warning argument
Published Jun 20, 2024 · Updated May 23, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux 5.15.3 through 5.15.19 and 5.16 through 5.16.5 allows local users to crash the kernel via OverlayFS copy-up. In ovl_copy_fileattr(), a failed lower-file attribute lookup passes a struct path instead of its dentry to a %pd2 warning formatter, causing an invalid dereference. Triggering the fault requires copy-up of a file carrying sync or noatime attributes to a tmpfs upper layer; the resulting crash interrupts the host.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
