CVE-2022-48665

Data corruption and hang via truncated sector index

Published Apr 28, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Integer overflow in the Linux kernel 5.19 through 5.19.11 and 6.0-rc1 through 6.0-rc6 allows local users to corrupt exFAT data or hang the host. In fs/exfat/fatent.c, exfat_zeroed_cluster stores a sector_t block number in an int loop index, truncating high sectors and zeroing wrong blocks. Triggering requires write access to an already-mounted exFAT volume larger than 2 TB; directory creation can overwrite filesystem structures or cause prolonged I/O.
