CVE-2022-4857Public exploit

Arbitrary code execution via oversized MBP file

Published Dec 30, 2022 · Updated Apr 9, 2025

Stack buffer overflow in the MBP file handler in Modbus Tools Modbus Poll 9.10.0 and earlier allows attackers to execute code via a crafted file. The handler converts length-prefixed file content to Unicode and passes it to lstrcpyW for copying into the 64-byte nNumber[7] stack buffer, allowing the data to overwrite the structured exception handler. Exploitation requires a user to open the crafted MBP file and runs code in the application user's context.
