Stored XSS via unescaped shortcode attributes
Published Feb 6, 2023 · Updated Mar 25, 2025
Stored XSS in Simple Tooltips before 2.1.4 allows remote authenticated users to execute script through crafted shortcode attributes. The shortcode renderer returns some style attributes to a page or post without validation or output escaping, so an injected event handler remains in stored content. Contributor-level access is required to save the shortcode, and execution requires another user to view or interact with the rendered tooltip.
