CVE-2022-48253Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Unauthenticated command execution via tilde-stripping traversal bypass

Published Jan 11, 2023 · Updated Apr 8, 2025

Path traversal in Nostromo nhttpd before 2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands through crafted HTTP request paths. With homedirs enabled, http_verify checks for /../ before http_header removes a tilde, turning /~../ into a traversal path. A non-chrooted server with the disabled-by-default homedirs option is required; readable files can be exposed, and executable files run as CGI.
