Contributor-level stored XSS via unescaped shortcode attribute
Published Feb 6, 2023 · Updated Mar 25, 2025
Stored XSS in WP-ShowHide before 1.05 allows remote authenticated users with contributor access to execute JavaScript through a shortcode. The shortcode renderer inserts the user-controlled type attribute into page markup without validation or output escaping, allowing an injected event handler to persist in a post. Execution occurs when a higher-privileged user, such as an administrator, views the rendered page containing the crafted shortcode.
