Protected file discovery via distinguishable helper errors
Published Jan 1, 2023 · Updated Apr 10, 2025
Information disclosure in Linux Containers LXC 5.0.1 and earlier allows local users to infer the existence of protected files. The setuid-root lxc-user-nic delete path opens an attacker-supplied network namespace path, then returns different errors when opening fails and when the opened object is not a network namespace. Any local low-privileged account can use those distinguishable responses as a file-existence oracle, but cannot read file contents through this flaw.
