Authenticated host crash via SMB2 error-response validation bypass
Published Dec 23, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
Out-of-bounds read in Linux kernel ksmbd 5.15 through 5.19 before 5.19.2 allows remote authenticated users to crash the host via SMB2_TREE_CONNECT. smb2_get_data_area_len treats an error response as having no data area, bypassing validation; a crafted nonzero Status with a long PathLength then makes smb_strndup_from_utf16 read past its allocated buffer. The ksmbd service must be enabled, and valid SMB credentials are required; exploitation causes a kernel OOPS and service interruption.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
