Out-of-bounds access via unchecked HEVC layer index
Published Jan 5, 2023 · Updated Apr 10, 2025
Buffer overflow in GPAC MP4Box 2.1-DEV-rev593-g007bf61a0 allows local users to trigger out-of-bounds access via a crafted HEVC MOV file. gf_hevc_read_sps_bs_internal uses a file-derived layer identifier directly to index the 16-entry vps->rep_format_idx array without first translating or bounds-checking it. A user must direct MP4Box to import the file; the supplied proof of concept triggers a sanitizer-detected crash, and the report identifies code execution as an additional impact.
