Command execution via raw DECRQSS echoback
Published Oct 19, 2023 · Updated Sep 12, 2024
Terminal character injection in Mintty before 3.6.3 allows context-dependent attackers to execute commands through crafted terminal output. In do_dcs, the fallback for an unrecognized DECRQSS request passes the attacker-controlled request string to child_printf, echoing arbitrary characters into the terminal input stream. Code execution occurs when unescaped hostile content reaches the terminal and its echoed control characters are interpreted as shell input, as demonstrated through a crafted Git commit message viewed with git log.
