Administrator escalation via stored post-head script injection

Published Jan 19, 2023 · Updated Nov 4, 2025

Stored XSS in post creation in Ghost Foundation Ghost 5.9.4 allows remote authenticated users to gain administrator privileges. The Admin API accepts an iframe event handler in codeinjection_head and stores it for execution when the post is rendered. A non-administrator author account and an administrator previewing or visiting the post are required, and successful script execution grants administrator privileges.
