Silent invalid-archive acceptance via unchecked stream flags
Published Apr 19, 2025 · Updated Apr 21, 2025
Improper XZ stream validation in 7-Zip 22.01 allows attackers to have a crafted archive accepted without an error. The XZDec.c parser fails to reject reserved bits in XZ stream flags and returns success instead of reporting the malformed header. Exploitation requires a user or local application to process the crafted file, causing invalid compressed data to be trusted silently by dependent workflows.
