Persistent launcher hang via unbounded database inserts
Published May 30, 2023 · Updated Jan 14, 2025
Denial of service in Action Launcher 50.5 allows local users to make the launcher permanently unresponsive through database inserts. Unauthorized apps can repeatedly call ContentResolver.insert on the settings provider with large title values, which are persisted and later loaded into memory on the UI thread during initialization. Exploitation requires a malicious Android app on the device and the launcher to open; rebooting does not clear the records or restore the home screen.
