Stored XSS via unescaped breadcrumb shortcode attribute
Published Feb 21, 2023 · Updated Mar 12, 2025
Stored XSS in Markup (JSON-LD) structured in schema.org through 4.8.1 allows remote authenticated users to execute scripts via shortcodes. The breadcrumb shortcode returns its class attribute to page HTML without validation or escaping; a crafted quote and event handler persist JavaScript. Contributor-level permission is required, a parent page must be selected for the breadcrumb to render, and a user must open the page to trigger the script.
