Man-in-the-middle attacks via zero-passkey pairing
Published Dec 19, 2022 · Updated Apr 17, 2025
Authentication bypass in Microchip RN4870 firmware 1.43 allows physically proximate attackers to pair without entering the passkey. The BLE peripheral accepts PairRandomSend with the passkey set to zero before confirmation or user input, then completes pairing and encryption. Exploitation requires BLE radio range and enables impersonation of both endpoints for a man-in-the-middle attack; PIC LightBlue Explorer Demo 4.2 DT100112 is also affected.
