CVE-2022-46397Network attack vector

Plaintext inference via predictable chained AES-CBC IVs

Published Mar 28, 2023 · Updated Feb 19, 2025

Predictable IV generation in FD.io VPP 19.04 through 22.10 allows remote attackers to infer AES-CBC IPsec plaintext from network traffic. The native and Intel IPsec Multi-Buffer backends satisfy VNET_CRYPTO_OP_FLAG_INIT_IV by chaining IVs, exposing a sequence predictable before encryption. Exploitation requires an AES-CBC security association and a chosen-plaintext position that permits ciphertext comparison; impact is limited to disclosure of encrypted data.
