Code execution via unchecked ORCA coordinate loop
Published Jul 21, 2023 · Updated Nov 4, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in Open Babel 3.1.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by supplying a malformed ORCA file. OrcaOutputFormat::ReadMolecule allocates confCoords from the file's nAtoms value, then writes every four-token coordinate row without checking the row index against that allocation. Exploitation requires parsing through obabel, OBConversion, or a language binding; remote reachability exists when an embedding service accepts untrusted files.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
