Account takeover via inherited socket namespace properties
Published Dec 5, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025
Prototype handling in NodeBB before 2.6.1 allows remote attackers to impersonate users and take over accounts via Socket.IO messages. src/socket.io/index.js initializes Namespaces as an ordinary object, so attacker-controlled inherited property names resolve as valid socket namespaces. No authentication or user interaction is required; a crafted network payload can assume another user's identity and control that account.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
