CVE-2022-45886

Kernel use-after-free via unsynchronized DVB removal

Published Nov 25, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

A race condition in Linux kernel 6.0.9 and earlier allows local users to trigger a use-after-free in the DVB network driver. The dvb_device_open path fails to check dvbnet->exit and lacks removal locking, so it can open a DVB network device while disconnect frees its state. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access, precise timing, and physical disconnection of a DVB device; the stale access exposes freed kernel memory and can disrupt the host.
