Service crash via unbounded recursive JSON parsing
Published Dec 13, 2022 · Updated Apr 22, 2025
Stack exhaustion in Hutool JSON 5.8.10 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash Java applications via deeply nested JSON or XML data. JSONTokener.nextValue recursively constructs JSONObject or JSONArray instances for each opening delimiter without enforcing a nesting-depth limit, exhausting the thread stack. No authentication or user interaction is required when an application exposes untrusted data to the parser; the bounded consequence is interruption of the parsing process or hosting service.
